Common Vacuum Cleaner Problems

vacuum problems

Is your vacuum cleaner under performing?

Many people take the Spring season as an opportunity to deep clean their homes and start fresh. However, common vacuum problems can arise when cleaning is increased. If your vacuum is not performing well you may be inclined to toss it, but wait! There are several quick and easy fixes you can do at home.

The most common complaint we hear is that the vacuum isn’t picking up any more. While this is a major issue the cause can usually be traced back to a simple issue:

  • Check the machine over and make sure everything is completely connected. If the dirt collection bucket or hose assembly isn’t securely re-attached to the machine after each use the vacuum will not perform at it’s full capability.
  • Flat rubber belts need to be replaced every 12-18 months, or when they are broken. If the belt is stretched, worn, or missing the machine will not be able to effectively remove dirt and debris from carpeting and changing the belt usually solves the problem.

For a vacuum cleaner to effectively clean flooring and other surfaces the suction needs to be strong enough to move the particles through the system and into the bag or dirt receptacle of a bag less vacuum. If the suction at the end of the hose or wand is very weak there are a few things that can be done to resolve this issue:

  • When the vacuum bag, or dirt receptacle, becomes too full it prevents air from flowing through the machine. It is best to change the bag when it’s 2/3 full, and to empty the dirt receptacle after every use.
  • Much like belts, the filters in your vacuum need to be changed or washed regularly. If the filters are clogged the suction of the machine will be compromised. Typically filters need to be replaced every 12-24 months, and washable filters need to be cleaned every 1-6 months.
  • When large pieces of debris are picked up, like paper, it can cause a clog in the machine which will reduce the suction. If possible remove the wand from the vacuum and simply look through the tube – if you can see light there is no clog. Next detach the hose from the machine and insert a marble or small object into the opening where the wand usually connects. If the object passes through the wand there is no clog, however if it does not there could be something blocking the passage. Depending on the location and material of the clog it can sometimes be removed at home, and other times it will require a trip to a vacuum store.

Certain odours emitted from a vacuum cleaner are just a nuisance, and others can be an indication of a larger problem:

  • If your vacuum has a burning electrical or metallic smell while in use it can mean the motor has been damaged. It is best to turn the machine off and bring it to a repair centre for assessment.
  • A burning rubber smell usually indicates the belt on the machine has been broken.

These simple things can help you identify and resolve common problems that can prevent a vacuum from working properly. Please use this as a general guide – if you are unsure about performance issues you are experiencing refer to the owner’s manual or provide us with the model number for additional information and advice.

How to Combat Allergies This Spring

Allergy prevention 2014

Small changes can help to reduce allergy and asthma triggers in your home

The long winter may have gotten us down and had many longing for the warmer weather, but the transition into spring can be bittersweet for the allergy sufferers among us. Unfortunately we can’t control what happens outside, but we can make changes to our indoor environment to help prevent and reduce allergy symptoms this season. The small things can make a big difference!

One of the best things we can recommend is to: clean, clean, and clean! Whether your allergies are seasonal or environmental, keeping your home dirt and dust-free will remove potential triggers such as pet dander, mould spores, pollen, and mites.

  • Remove window treatments from your home entirely, or keep blinds and curtains clean and dust-free. Curtains can be laundered, and blinds can be cleaned easily with your vacuum.
  • Keep windows closed to prevent the wind from blowing allergy triggers inside.
  • Dust with a cloth that traps particles, like the e-cloths, not a duster or paper towel that just tosses them back into the air. The fibers on a microfiber cloth capture and lock in debris until they are washed which helps to reduce airborne particles, and they work with water eliminating the need for chemicals.
  • Vacuum carpeting, area rugs, and bare floors frequently to remove dust and dirt. Beam central vacuums have been clinically proven to improve nasal, non-nasal, eye, and sleep symptoms related to allergies. As well, since Beam central vacuums do not recirculate the dirt it removes 100% of the dust, mites, dander, and allergy triggers it comes into contact with. This is great news for individuals with allergies and asthma!
  • Keeping bedding clean and impenetrable to dust mites is an excellent way to fight allergies. Encase mattresses, pillows, and comforters in zippered mite-proof covers and wash bedding in hot water weekly.
  • For those with sensitivities to detergents or fragrances, Persil and Miele both make a “sensitive” line of laundry soaps.
  • Fight mould and bacteria in your home with steam instead of harsh chemicals that can be a trigger for people with breathing problems. The Reliable EnviroMate P7 is designed to kill harmful particles and remove dirt on any hard surface with only water.
  • And finally, clean the air! Air purifiers work to capture and destroy airborne allergens, bacteria, viruses, mould, fungi, and other harmful particles. IQAir is the only company that can boast a 0 (zero) parts per million dust emission, meaning they remove 100% of the particles and only release clean air.

Manage your environment and have a happy, healthy spring!

Numatic Harry Canister Vacuum Cleaner

Numatic Harry Vacuum Cleaner

Meet Harry – One of Numatic’s newest vacuum cleaners

The Numatic “Henry” vacuum line is memorable for its fun smiling cartoon face decal that gives the vacuum personality. Since Henry’s introduction in 1980, the British manufacturer has produced over 7 million of these units! Over the years Henry has been joined by Hetty, James, Charles, George and more: similar quality vacuums with various uses and specifications.

Originally named for members of the British Royal Family, the vacuum line also expanded into non-cleaning merchandise such as coffee mugs and kid’s pillows; evidence of how its sense of character and personality appeals to young and old alike. But aside from the novelty of the faces and names for the vacuums, the line sells well because it is a quality product that delivers on its promises.

The newest member of the Numatic family is Harry. Harry’s smiling face is topped with a paw print decal indicating that he is designed specifically for cleaning pet hair. Harry’s air-driven dual purpose Hairo Brush is excellent for picking up pet hair both on the floor and as a hand brush for upholstery and stairs.

Harry’s cloth HEPA bags trap dust and dirt, while the large surface area of the Tritex filter catches pet dander and allergens. Harry can also be used as a bagless vacuum for those not needing the extra filtration.

In addition to pet owners, Harry is also recommended for commercial customers who have a lot of low- to medium-pile carpeting because he comes with an electrified power head. The power head agitates carpet fibres for a deeper clean and Henry’s ultra-quiet yet powerful commercial grade motor ensures powerful suction.

Also included with Harry are a 12” combination floor and carpet head, two 8’ hoses (electrified and non-electrified), crevice tool, dust brush, and upholstery tool, and more. It has a 10 year warranty on the vacuum and a 5 year warranty on labour for domestic use or a 3 year commercial warranty.

Come on in and meet Harry today! He might just become the newest addition to your household too.

Spring Cleaning Tips, Tricks, and Cleaning Lists

Spring Cleaning Checklist

Spring Cleaning Checklist

Are you ready to put winter behind you? After the season we’ve had, chances are you’re anxious to start fresh and the best way to do so is with a little spring cleaning. Here is a handy checklist to help you get organized and inspired:

1. Dust, dust, dust

  • Dust all surfaces including furniture, knick knacks, books, and electronics.
  • Don’t forget the “high and low” dust collectors like ceiling fan blades, door/window frames, and baseboards.
  • The most effective way to dust is by starting at the highest point of a room and working your way to the bottom. This ensures any dust that falls down will be re-collected.

Proper dusting is one way to reduce allergens from your home. Reusable microfiber ECloths work great for this task; slightly dampen cloth, wipe area, then dry with a new cloth.

2. Clean floors

  • Vacuum the front, and back side, of area rugs – then vacuum the floor underneath. This is a great time to reposition or turn area rugs to ensure even wear.
  • Vacuum all carpeting which includes moving furniture (beds and couches) to clean the hidden areas.
  • Use a carpet extractor to deep clean carpeted surfaces.
  • Use a bare floor brush to vacuum hard floor surfaces, then use a cleaning system (like Bona).

Spring is the perfect time to clean your carpets and an extractor such as the Hoover F5912 will not be left to gather dust for the rest of the year either. Extractors are perfect for taking care of wet spills all year long.

3. Vacuum upholstery and furniture

  • Remove cushions from furniture and using the crevice tool on your vacuum clean all dirt and debris.
  • Using the upholstery tool, or mini turbine head, vacuum all areas of the furniture.

Spot clean any stains with Clean and Green Cat and Dog carpet and upholstery cleaner, or Hoover Professional Strength Stain Remover.

4. Clean windows

  • Clean all window coverings depending on care instructions (either vacuum/dust, or launder).
  • With the use of the glass E-Cloth clean the inside of all windows, and if windows can be removed from frame clean the outside as well.
  • Using the crevice tool vacuum any debris from the window sill.

For cleaning slat style blinds we suggest the Shutter blind vacuum attachment.

Room Specific Cleaning Lists:

Kitchen:

  • Remove all items from fridge and clean the shelf’s and inside door. Dispose of any expired food items.
  • Clean other appliances (stove, microwave, coffee machine, etc.) according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
  • Remove all items from cabinets and clean the shelf’s and inside doors.
  • Remove all items from pantry and clean shelf’s – dispose of any expired food items.
  • Wipe down countertops and outsides of cabinets doors.

E-cloth makes a microfiber kitchen pack as well as a special cloth for stainless appliances. Don’t forget to clean behind the refrigerator!

BEDROOMS:

  • Remove and launder bedding, including pillows.
  • Vacuum, then flip or rotate mattresses. You can use special mattress attachments, like the Miele Mattress Nozzle, or an upholstery tool for this cleaning task.
  • Vacuum and organize closet and store winter clothing. Donate any unworn items from your winter section.

Use Fresh Wave Home Spray directly on mattresses to remove odours.

Bathroom:

  • Clean toilet, sink, shower walls, tub and mirrors.
  • Replace shower curtain liner if necessary.
  • Remove all items from medicine cabinet and clean the interior. Do the same for other storage areas in the bathroom like linen closest or under-the-sink storage.
  • Safely dispose of all expired or unused medications. Lean how to through the Medications Return Program.

Reliable’s hand-held EnviroMate steamer safely cleans tile surfaces of dirt, germs, and bacteria without harsh chemicals.

We hope this list helps you stay organized and focused during your spring cleaning, and provides some ideas for safe and specialized cleaning products and tools. Get the whole family involved and it will be done before you know it!

Beam Alliance Central Vacuum

Beam Alliance Central Vacuum

Limited edition Beam Alliance central vacuum package – quiet power, and innovative technology

Beam has been a leader in central vacuum systems design for over 50 years. Its latest offering, the Alliance line, continues that tradition with the use of smart technology, powerful yet quiet motors, superior suction, removal of indoor air pollution, and convertible onboard tools.

Beam christened its latest central vacuum cleaner line “Alliance” as a reference to its advanced technology that enables two-way communication between the hose handle and power unit. The illuminated Smart Screen on the power unit displays information about the system’s performance and relays it to the hose handle interface, allowing the user to adjust the suction levels and monitor the functioning of the system while vacuuming. The Smart Screen confirms the communication link is working and alerts the user to potential issues such as motor fault or full canister. That’s high tech cleaning!

The Alliance line of central vacuums also features a high efficiency motor that uses 30% less energy than traditional motors and is extremely quiet to boot. The motor is a soft start which reduces wear and tear and gives it a longer life. The Alliance boasts 30% more cleaning performance than Beam Serenity.

Stored conveniently on the underside of the telescopic wand, the 3-in-1 tool that converts from a dust brush to crevice tool to upholstery brush also comes standard with every Alliance purchase.

Another innovation to make life simpler is the easy release bucket – simply press down on any two points around the ring to empty the dirt. No more twisting buckets, or latches, to fumble with. The Alliance also features a Gore Technologies HEPA Cleanstream self-cleaning filter featuring a lifetime warranty.

A quick clean inlet on every Alliance power unit means that you can attach the hose directly to the unit for cleaning of garage or automobile. This standard feature greatly increases the range and convenience of your cleaning.

For a limited time, the Beam Alliance Special Edition Q Package will be available for purchase. This package includes the Beam 650SCN50A 650 AirWatt Alliance power unit, with electric hose, premium Beam Q hose package, and bonus hose cover. The Q package offers a deluxe power nozzle which has a swivel neck and LED light for easy navigation. The 13” floor brush is made of soft, natural hair and has rubber side wheels to protect floors.

These limited edition units won’t last long, get them while you can! And start cleaning a whole new way.

Eureka AirSpeed Vacuum Cleaners

Eureka AS1005 AirSpeed Vacuum in action

The Eureka AS1005 AirSpeed vacuum in action cleaning carpeting stairs.

If you’re looking for a quality upright vacuum at a reasonable price consider the Eureka AirSpeed Gold AS1001AE (bagless) or the Eureka AS1055AX (bagged). Bagged or bagless, the choice is yours.

Both models feature Eureka’s patented AirSpeed Technology. AirSpeed Technology ensures that air carrying dirt and dust takes the most direct route to the bag or chamber, minimizing resistance and maximizing suction. The dirt travels through two smooth tubes that have limited bends and turns, allowing more air to pass through the vacuum.  The direct air path from floor to cup (or bag) decreases the distance for dirt to travel, which increases the amount of airflow resulting in powerful suction.

Another unique use for AirSpeed Technology is that if you’re vacuuming with tools rather than the vacuum cleaner power nozzle you can change the setting to “tools” and the machine will direct the dirt directly from the attachment to the bag or cup. Most machines have the dirt traveling through the ribbed hose regardless of the surface being cleaned which results in lack of suction. In addition, the tubes that lead to the chamber or bag are much wider than on other vacuums.

Eureka AirSpeed Uprights are recommended for homes that are mostly carpeted. There is a height adjustment knob which raises and lowers the nozzle so it is at the correct height for the type of carpet being vacuumed. Proper height adjustment ensures the right level of agitation and suction for your carpet.

AirSpeed uprights are not recommended for bare floors as the agitator continues to spin even on the bare floor setting. Cleaning bare floors with this model requires a bare floor brush sold as a separate attachment.

Air quality and reduction of allergens is ensured with the dust cup filter which prevents fine dust from being sucked into the motor (less motor maintenance) and the HEPA exhaust filter which provides filtration to .3 micron particles. The air exiting the machine is virtually dust-free!

Both models’ extra-long hose and power cord give the machine a long reach and the vacuum’s light weight (18.5 lbs.) means it is easy to maneuver around obstacles and to move to different levels in your home.

A quality machine with powerful cleaning power at a reasonable price. Try one out today!

How to Treat Pet Messes, Odours, and Hair

Pet MessesPet owners– we love our animals and would do anything for them, but we could do without their messes! Although we can’t stop our pets from shedding or having occasional accidents, we can at least make cleanup easier. McHardy Vacuum has tools and products to make cleaning up after your pet simple, safe and effective.

The first thing to remember is that the quicker you can get to the mess, the easier it will be to clean up – so try and treat stains and accidents promptly before they set. And when you clean, choose a product that is made specifically for pet messes and pet odours.

Pet Messes and Accidents

Clean and Green Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner removes residual pet messes using natural ingredients rather than harsh chemicals. The natural formula encapsulate stains and odours which then biodegrade naturally, making the process safe for your pets, your family, and the planet. It penetrates deep into carpet and upholstery and is 100% biodegradable, fragrance free, and non-toxic. The best part? Spray it on and leave it; the cleaner does the rest. Clean and Green makes a formula for tile and wood floors, too.

Pet Odours

For refreshing upholstery, pet beds, rugs and other fabrics, trust Clean and Green Furniture Refresher. This spray eliminates lingering pet smells in fabrics and leather by trapping and breaking down odours, not by masking them with perfumes. Eliminating smells from prior messes especially is important because pets have a much better sense of smell than humans and my try to mark the site of a prior mess. Fresh Wave Odour Eliminator is another great room or upholstery spray that leaves the fresh scent of lime, pine needle, clove and cedarwood upon spraying – a fresh, clean, natural smell that disappears as it dries.

Pet Hair

Pet hair is a fact of life for dog and cat owners so regular vacuuming is a must. But regular grooming is also an effective way to remove pet hair before it even hits the floor. If your furry friend is comfortable being around the vacuum, consider a groom tool that takes hair and dander right from your pet and into your vacuum. Designed by a veterinarian, the Dr.Smith Pet Hair Fantastic grooming tool attachment fits most standard vacuums and doubles as an upholstery tool to keep your car, stairs, furniture and even clothing pet hair-free.

If your home has carpet or area rugs, you may need to use a steam carpet cleaner to loosen and remove pet hair and dirt trapped deep in the carpet’s fibers. The Royal MRY7910 Carpet Cleaner features two agitator brushes, dual suction nozzles, and handle controls so all the switches you need are at your fingertips. For smaller messes and deep spot cleaning check out the Bissell 1400D Little Green Machine, a compact carpet cleaner that weighs in at only 12 lbs.!

Finally, for chasing down pet hair where your power head can’t reach, consider a universal turbo brush hand held attachment that fits most standard vacuum cleaner extension wands or hose handles. Using a high speed rotating brush that operates by a suction-driven turbine, this attachment is ideal for carpeted stairs, along baseboards, on couches and chairs, and even mattresses.

Hand and Stick Vacuums – the best tools for small messes

Electrolux_Ultra_Power

The Electrolux UltraPower EL3000A has the longest battery life for a rechargeable vacuum

If you’ve found the perfect canister or upright vacuum for your home and you love to use it, congratulations! Nothing makes cleaning easier than having the right tool for the job. However, for those days when small messes crop up and you’re short on time a hand or stick vacuum may be just the thing to round out your arsenal of cleaning supplies.

Stick vacuums are small upright machines designed for light duty cleaning (such as vacuuming dry cereal or crumbs in the morning) or for quick pickups in between regular vacuuming. They are not intended to be the primary vacuum in a home as the motor is smaller in size, and most do not allow for use of attachments.

The Electrolux UltraPower EL3000 is a brand new stick vacuum with a one hour battery life. It’s designed to be there when you need it, and with three cleaning speeds will pick up on both bare floors and carpet. The Hoover LiNX BH50010 is our most popular stick vacuum and has a fade-free rechargeable battery with power indicator so you know when it’s time to charge the battery. Both are lightweight and easy to maneuver around furniture and in tight spaces. With the average stick vacuum weighing 7 lb. (just over 3 kg), they are easy to operate and convenient to store.

Hand vacuums are used for cleaning upholstery, stairs, vehicles, and other areas that are difficult to clean with a full size vacuum. There are many options beyond the original “dust buster” style and many feature powerful motors, deep cleaning brush rolls, attachments, and bagless operation. The Eureka 71B has a built in hose and crevice tool for cleaning tight spaces, as well as a power switch for constant suction. This means no trigger or button to hold down when vacuuming – which is one of the biggest complaints we hear about handheld vacuums.

McHardy Vacuum stocks many makes, models, and styles of hand and stick vacuums – we have one that’s right for you. Cleaning your home efficiently has never been easier!
